Welcome back, Sammie!

W

This spring season, our sweet Sammie the squirrel successfully raised 2 boys and 1 girl. We named the precious boys Springer and Sawyer and the sweet girl, Saintly. From observing the squirrel behavior over the years, we think once her young are ready for the wildlife, she sends off the girls to find their own territories and the boys stick around a little longer until they are ready to start their own families and eventually leave. At times, Sammie will be gone for a few days and then always comes back home. Or, Sammie possibly needs a squirrel vacation since she works so hard raising her family.

This time around, Sammie was gone for 2 weeks. The longest she has been away from home since we have known her that I was beginning to wonder if something happened to her. Sweet Sammie is not only a wild fox squirrel, I also consider her my backyard wildlife friend, one of our fur babies. She is truly a remarkable fox squirrel and it felt so devastating to think that she might be gone. Especially after already losing our 2 other fur babies, Hallie Bunny, our resident wild cottontail rabbit and Maxwell “Max”, our family indoor cat. During those 2 weeks Sammie was gone I decided to focus on loving her 2 precious boys, Sawyer and Springer when they would come around. They both have the cutest personalities and are so adorable. I plan to share their pure cuteness  about each of them soon. Scotty, Sammie’s sweet love would also visit often and even became more comfortable around us. He is such a handsome squirrel. Even in the midst of all the squirrel pure cuteness, our backyard was not the same without our sweet Sammie around. I think the her squirrel family felt that too.

Well, I am beyond excited that Sammie is back home after those 2 weeks! When she arrived, it looked like she was thrilled to be back too. She took some time to get reacquainted with our yard and surroundings. Of course, we sat together and enjoyed a pecan treat. I grabbed my canon rebel camera to capture the moment with her. This featured picture looks like Sammie is proud to call our yard her home.

Welcome back, Sammie! We sure love you! You are special to us!
